Figurative/Still life
Mary's painting takes different forms. The practice of life drawing allows her to look at what is there, to make direct marks on the paper often without looking at the paper and the marks she is making. Her figurative painting looks at reality in much the same way, usually self portraits using photographs she has taken of herself as reference. Memories from childhood also influence her work.
Illustrative
These paintings fill in the gaps of what she knows. They are stories taken from everyday life, often inspired by nature, filling in details with the imagination. "Rare Birds at Redmires" was conceived with no binoculars and it wasn't clear what the birds looked like, perhaps they looked like this (see below). Often she draws the figures with her eyes closed imagining the shapes from within as in "Lovers in Yellow".
Abstract
Mary takes a simple shape, a circle and a line and explores the relationship between them through space and colour. In the "Light Gravity" series she has used stones and string, to create a juxtaposition of subtle colour, light paintwork with the heaviness of the stone.
